client review
"Nadia was a huge help to our family. Before we worked with Nadia, our Autistic son was really struggling with sleep - getting to sleep and staying asleep seemed an almost nightly issue - and when we reached out to her, we were all incredibly sleep deprived and desperate for guidance.
Nadia asked wonderful questions and really got to know what our issues were before laying out a clear and concise plan for us to try. She was thoughtful, creative, friendly and flexible, and her gentle guidance allowed us to work together to bring our family to a much better place, sleep-wise. She also was knowledgeable about our Autistic son's unique issues with sleep, and provided valuable insights and ideas that were illuminating in understanding what was going on.
We are incredibly grateful to Nadia, and the positive shift she helped to instill in our son and in our whole family. We would absolutely recommend her to anyone who has a kiddo with sleep issues!" - Samantha, Mum to 3yo

Can toddlers and children with autism sleep well?
Autism itself does not cause a lack of sleep, but it can contribute to sleep disturbances. Statistics show that up to 80% of autistic children struggle with sleep. The reasons for this vary depending on the person, as we know, no person with autism is the same as the next person with autism so it's really important to focus on the individual factors and needs of the child.
Many children with autism may have difficulty with sensory processing, high anxiety, hyperactivity and irregular sleep patterns which can make it challenging to fall asleep and stay asleep. Scientific research suggests that many autistic people produce lower melatonin levels than a person without autism. This is an important factor as melatonin is our sleepy hormone. It increases during the day so that by night time, we are ready to fall asleep. It then decreases and by morning, we are ready to wake up. With lower levels of melatonin, it can be really difficult to fall asleep.

You may have already discussed the options of melatonin supplements for your child with your pediatrician. It is a personal choice and I would recommend doing lots of research before making a decision.

Interestingly, most typical sleep methods or techniques that you may have tried don't always work with children with ASD or high anxiety, they can even make it worse. Have you tried everything? Are some things working for a short time but then go back to square one again?

The good news is there is much more research and consideration into autism and sleep so that families like you, can seek help from professionals like me.

I completed my Diploma in Autism and Sleep to specifically equip me to help families facing challenges like you. I don't want any family to feel like that have no support or no one to listen.
How does autism affect sleep in children?
Autism can affect sleep in children in various ways, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent night wakings, early morning awakenings, and sleep apnea. These sleep disturbances may be caused by a variety of factors such as sensory sensitivities, anxiety, irregular sleep patterns, medication side effects, and co-occurring conditions like ADHD.

Sleep deprivation in children can lead to a variety of negative consequences, both in the short-term and long-term. In the short-term, sleep deprivation can cause irritability, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, decreased performance in school, and decreased physical coordination. Children who are sleep deprived may also have an increased risk of accidents and injuries.

With these factors already in the mix it can be incredibly difficult to break the cycle. Research shows that by completing an individual full and in-depth assessment, discovering what the underlying factors are for a particular child and implementing a specific, bespoke sleep plan (very subtly) can help improve sleep quality for children with autism.
