Will switching to formula help my baby sleep?

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Switching to formula over breastmilk doesn’t lead to a ‘better’ sleeper (what is the definition of a good sleeping baby anyway?!) and here’s why…

Breast milk contains melatonin (our lovely sleepy hormone) and incredibly, the amount of melatonin in breast milk increases at night which can really help send baby off into a deep slumber.

It is widely reported that formula can take a little longer to digest than breast milk which can potentially mean that a formula fed baby will get hungry after a longer stretch of time thus seeming like they're asleep for longer periods. These longer periods of sleep can be compared with a breast fed baby who wakes more often but waking because of hunger isn’t anything to do with sleep skills, in my opinion.

However you choose to feed your baby will not have an effect on the way your baby sleeps, there are so many other variables to sleep and all babies have their own individual sleep needs so don’t feel that you have to change their feed in order to get more Z's.
