So many of the parents I talk to dread bedtime, they find it stressful, triggering and the opposite of calm! If this is you, take a look at these 4 super useful tips to try before or during the bedtime routine to help you stay calm and look after yourself.
1. Re-frame your thoughts in difficult moments - for example… instead of thinking ‘my child is upset and I’m not helping’, think ‘I am here, supporting my child and I am keeping them safe’.
2. If you are on your own and your child is safe, it is okay to step out of the room for a minute and take a breath. You will be helping your child more by going back into the room feeling calmer.
3. Before bedtime double check you have been to the loo, had a glass of water and something to eat. There is nothing worse than settling down to start settling your child to sleep and realising you need a wee! Do you hold it and hope they fall asleep fast, do you go quickly and hope they don’t notice…
4. Whilst in your child’s room practice deep breathing. This will help slow your heart beat, balance your hormones and reduce stress. The noise of your breathing may also calm your child too.
I hope these work for you and really help bedtime become a calmer place to be.
